He had only to move to break all the windows in the book. Every step he took was the wrong one. Every choice he made was the one she shouldn't have made. Now, protagonists make mistakes, or every book would end with the world set right on page 19. But this guy never learned. But this guy never learned from his mistakes.

For example, as he reads, John can shield his eyes against the sun, or move the paper into the shade. He could carefully rip out the notice and hand the torn-up remains to the friend. Darn! See, I'm still learning. A master at this art of internal action is Dorothy Dunnett, who writes historical epics. She has one hero who is very manipulative, and also very mechanical. So while he's discussing how to ruin his adversary's business, he's often busying himself carving a little toy and knotting a web of string.
