The details of the experimental procedure are described elsewhere [5,6]. Photodctedor LsseIBcam Wollaston wire iz Fig. 1A schematic diagram of a micro-thermal analyzer. The thermal probe is a fine V-shaped platinum wire supported by Wollaston wires consisting of a silver sheath and a fine platinum core. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Figure 2 shows typical examples of the micro-thermal images obtained. The light and dark contrasts indicate areas of high and low thermal conductance, respectively. It is clear that silicon nitride grains have high thermal conductance, while the glassy phase at grain boundaries has low conductance.

Nanosized or submicrometer powders must be used to produce such a material. Their efficient processing is still a challenge because manufacturing of finely grained zirconia ceramics with very low porosity makes high demands on the dispersing and shaping techniques. It is necessary to provide dense and homogenous green bodies to reach homogenous densification and the required low porosity after sintering. Dry pressing methods are not suitable for shaping of nanosized powders. Optimal shaping requires a dispersion of the powders into stable primary particles.
